5 deterrence
•• deter, deterrence
•• Deter to discourage or restrain from acting, as through fear (The Random House Dictionary).
Certainly, kids shouldn’t smoke; parents, taxes and laws should deter them (International Herald Tribune).
Ведь в самой этимологии этого слова (от латинского terrere – пугать; отсюда же и слово terror) и в обиходном значении глагола (см., например, определение в Oxford American Dictionary: to discourage or prevent from doing something through fear or dislike of the consequences) явно содержится элемент страха. Is capital punishment a deterrent to crime?
